The Concerto Experience

The experience of performing with an orchestra is of paramount importance in building a career in the music profession. With this in mind, PianoTexas is one of a few International Festivals in the world that collaborates with a professional orchestra to perform with selected Young Artists a complete concerto.

The Concerto Competition will be held to select two to three performers for the Concerto Winners Concert. Performance of a complete concerto is required with a second pianist. Rehearsals with the second piano will be arranged. Judges for the Competition will be announced at the festival.

FWSO

Recitals

Solo recital programs will be arranged for the Young Artists performing participants. These recitals take place in the superb acoustics of the three concert halls on the TCU campus. They are the heart of the program and provides excellent experiences during the festival.

All recitals are open to the general public and are recorded and streamed over the Internet. Each performer is limited to no more than 12 minutes per performance. The Artistic Director is responsible for programing these recitals and his decision is final.

Repertoire submitted for PianoTexas may be used for both master classes and recitals.

Video recordings of these recitals will be available as part of the Media Package for the participants to purchase.

Master Classes

Each performer will have two master classes with different guest artists. To enable an overall program balance, applicants are requested to submit at least three or more substantial pieces. Concerto repertoire may be included, but the concerto selected for the concerto competition may not be performed before the competition. All the repertoire must be performed from memory.

Compositions of substantial length like complete concertos, sonatas and suites are encouraged; however, due to time restraints it is the prerogative of the guest artist to select which movement to hear.

The Artistic Director is responsible for the allocation of performers and selection of repertoire for the master classes and his decisions are final.

The Master Classes are open to the general public. They are recorded and streamed through the Internet.

The Master Classes will be available as part of the Media Package for the participants to purchase.

Private Lessons

Young Artists performers will receive three private lessons (each of 50 minutes) with different guest artists. These lessons provide opportunities for in-depth examination and discussion of musical and technical matters, so although the choice is free, the repertoire should be carefully considered.

The Artistic Director is responsible for the allocation of all private lessons and his decisions are final.

Additional private lessons are possible, at extra cost, depending on the availability of the guest artists. The scheduling and fees should be discussed directly between the guest artist and the participant.

Required Repertoire

PianoTexas is committed to provide the performers in the Young Artist Program with a challenging and satisfying professional experience. Accordingly, it is expected that these selected participants prepare and present a repertoire of three substantial and several smaller works that would be considered suitable for recitals and master classes. Participating in the Concerto Competition is optional but strongly recommended.

The repertoire performed during the Festival must be memorized and chosen to represent the highest artistic abilities of the performer.

For information on repertoire requirements for the audition videos, please see the Application Information Page.

Scholarship Agreement

The 24 selected Young Artist Performers must accept the rules, regulations and expectations governing the receipt of a tuition scholarship to attend the PianoTexas International Festival & Academy. The duration of residence specified on the top of this webpage is required and non-negotiable.

In accepting an invitation and scholarship to PianoTexas, Young Artist performers confirm their understanding of, and compliance with, the Program’s rules and regulations for the duration of the Festival.

The Mission of the Festival is to provide a professional experience in support of a musician’s training for a demanding career. The program is based on the required high level of performance at all times. It is expected that participants attend the participants’ recitals, master classes and the Distinguished Artists recitals.

In the pursuit a realistic professional atmosphere during the Festival, we will invite any Active Observer to replace a performer who is unable to fulfill his/her participation. This includes the concerto, solo recitals and master classes.

Active and General Observers

PianoTexas warmly welcomes observers of all ages. This is a great opportunity to observe the teaching of many different artists of international standing, and to attend the Distinguished Artists Series, the concerto and solo concerts as well as the “Conversations with Guest Artists” during the Young Artists program.

Active observers receive three private lessons as well as a performance opportunity in one recital.

In the pursuit a realistic professional atmosphere during the Festival, Active Observers have the opportunity to replace a performer who is unable to fulfill his/her participation. This includes the concerto, solo recitals and master classes. We strongly advise Active Observers to have their repertoire ready if the opportunity occurs.

General observers are most welcome to join in all events organized by PianoTexas during the Young Artists program.

Practice Rooms

Practice rooms equipped with grand pianos are available for all Performers.

Active observers are most welcome to use practice facilities when not occupied by performers. There are also a number of practice rooms with upright pianos, open and free for everyone to practice.
General observers are welcome to use any of the practice rooms with upright pianos.

All practice rooms are open 24 hours a day.

Conversations

“Conversations” are light-hearted affairs, in which PianoTexas’ vastly experienced guest artists share valuable information along with entertaining stories and anecdotes of a life in music.

These highly popular, informal question-and-answer sessions provide excellent opportunities for constructive interactive dialogues on such important topics as the music profession, careers, recording, performing, practicing, competitions and understanding of styles.

Media Package

Young Artist Performers have the option to purchase the PianoTexas Media Package. This is a collection of each participant’s recorded performances, master classes and photos.
